The health of a future being is a complex issue.  Epigenetics studies the impact of external environmental factors on gene expression and hence how environmental factors may affect the health of offspring. In circumstances where a child is conceived naturally, epigenetics considers how environmental factors such as age, presence of toxins, insulin levels, and lifestyle may impact the health of offspring. In addition to these factors, assisted reproduction introduces new environmental conditions through such processes as ovarian stimulation, in vitro culture, and freezing of embryos.  At this Epigenetics conference, recent evidence suggesting the potential impact of environmental factors on the health of the future child will be presented and discussed to inform all healthcare providers, particularly those in the field of infertility.  The first step is to generate awareness so that we may better understand how health can be improved.
